Highly reminiscent of the original series without ever being a total carbon copy, the reboot of one of the best TV shows of all time didn’t disappoint. The film contains a wonderful balance of appeal for trekkies and newcomers alike, and has created many new fans of the series. The plot was rather clichéd, though it wisely broke away from its TV show bonds to make a more original “Trek” story. The Enterprise crew was beautifully cast and appropriately re-imagined for modern day times, creating a superb introduction to the new franchise. “Star Trek” really has boldly gone where no film has gone before.
It is extremely refreshing to know that the new “Star Trek” movie franchise has not just rehashed the same villains and plot twists as the original series, and it shows some creative integrity on the filmmakers’ parts. After all, this film is a reboot, not a remake. This allows the story to expand, and even to take a few liberties with the original universe. While the time travel and alternate reality-based plot is rather hackneyed, it allowed for some rather controversial changes to the beloved universe. As I am not a serious fan of the series, I was able to enjoy the unpredictability and new direction, and felt that it was a shrewd decision. At least this way I know that I won’t be seeing Kirk scream “Kahn!” anytime soon.
I was actually amazed at how excellent the new Enterprise crew was. All of the actors were exceptional in their roles, and had great on-screen chemistry. The story spends plenty of time introducing these characters to us, and emphasizes their flawed relationships with each other. By the end of the movie we actually start to like these people, and begin caring about their fates. Once again, the story decided to cut loose from its TV show roots and throw a more modern twist on the beloved characters, which added some much-needed novelty to the series. The crew is now tough, gritty, smart-mouthy, and oddly prone to fistfights. The contemporary attitudes of the characters were, surprisingly, quite entertaining, and added even more to the overall quality of the movie.
The film “Star Trek” deserves a special place in sci fi history, and its success will no doubt spawn an abundant movie franchise. We can only hope that if it does, it will receive all the same quality care that this film received. This movie was a heck of a way to kick off the return of the Enterprise, and it is an admirable addition to the Trek universe. It deserves a strong nine out of ten stars.
